Le théâtre et le spectacle n'existent que dans le présent d'une rencontre entre deux groupes : celui des acteurs porteurs de la fiction et celui de l'assistance, du public, des spectateurs. Une fois la rencontre passée, il ne reste plus que des traces : un texte, des images, des souvenirs. La scénographie est l'une des traces les plus lisibles du présent de la rencontre.À travers l'analyse de nombreux textes, dessins, plans, enluminures, peintures et photographies, l'auteur nous propose une lecture emblématique, rhétorique ou allégorique des décors, de l'architecture et des scénographies, depuis l'Antiquité jusqu'au début du XXIe siècle. Ces traces du temps, où architecte, machiniste, décorateur ou peintre, bien que n'étant pas « scénographes » n'ont pas cessé de collaborer à la perpétuelle invention d'un lieu pour la représentation, sont aussi l'expression d'une vision du monde. Car le théâtre ou le spectacle qu'ils soient cérémonie religieuse, comme dans l'Antiquité grecque et au Moyen Âge ou divertissement comme à Rome, en Italie à la Renaissance ou aujourd'hui, sont l'expression d'une culture, d'une époque, d'une pensée.

Doch begnügt sich das Kino nicht damit, existierende Bauwerke abzubilden; mit seinen Methoden der Bewegung, der Kadrage und der Montage durchkreuzt, manipuliert und konstruiert es Architekturen.
